Sandy Shimoda

Sandy Shimoda is the owner of Vintage Pilates ~ a business that returns to Joe Pilates’ original method of exercise as it was taught to Jay Grimes. 

Sandy has been teaching movement for 45 years and earned her initial certification from Romana Krzynowska. She was lucky to be a private client and collaborator with Jay Grimes for 20 years, giving her a unique opportunity to refine her craft. Sandy never tires of seeing clients move and feel better, helping teachers to understand Joe’s work more completely, and guiding studio owners toward success in their businesses. Sandy has contributed to the development of the Contrology line at Balanced Body, appeared in videos for Classical Pilates and Gaiam, and has been featured in Pilates Style, Pilatesglossy, VoyageLA, Pilatesology and The Pilates Link. You can work with her Online, at her Pop-Up studio in Honolulu, or when she guest teaches at studios around the world.

  • YOU can! This weekend is designed for clients and instructors alike. This is an excellent opportunity to learn directly from one of my own mentors to reinvigorate your practice and help you work deeper into the Pilates method we all know and love.

  • These workouts reflect the way Joe and Clara taught Pilates in their New York studio. In a small group setting, you will work out independently while Sandy offers guidance, support, or a challenge to help you achieve results and leave feeling invigorated. This is a great class for those who know their own Pilates program or have been participating in Open Gym sessions at Whitney Johnson Pilates.

  • If you are traveling from out of town, there are many great places to stay.

    Exhibit A2 is a boutique hotel just two doors down from the studio, although there are many great hotels within walking distance depending on your budget. AirBnBs are also a great option. I would recommend looking in the Downtown, Kerrytown, or Old West Side neighborhoods for walkability.

    If you don’t mind a drive into the studio, Weber’s boutique hotel is also a great option with an adorable indoor pool and restaurant.
